Security and resilience for the gas network

SecureGas is a Research Project in the EU Framework Program H2020 for Research and Innovation, aiming to strengthen the security and resilience of the European Gas Network.

The gas network is complex by nature and highly interconnected. It crosses borders, utilizes a variety of different transportation pipelines, and is served by numerous diverse storage arrangements. All this complexity makes it a relevant example of Critical Infrastructure (CI) vulnerable to disruption by natural disasters, accidents, cyber-attacks, malicious behaviour, criminal activity or terrorism.

How the SecureGas Consortium will contribute to the strengthening of the European gas network through research and development, is outlined in the first press release of the italian project coordinator RINA. We are happy to be one of 21 partners in the multidisciplinary SecureGas Team

One was in Eisenerz for which DMAT was the venue manager. We prepared in 2017 / 2018 together with the Red Cross Organisation of Styria an interesting venue – a training centre on a mountain with several levels/sites. Also, a cave rescue team of Slovenia was the first that was classified for the EU voluntary pool (in the Frauenmauerhöhle).

Now already the preparations for the MODEX in Eisenerz for 2020 (4. – 7. June 2020) has been started – and DMAT will be again responsible for it.

The exercises are so-called Table-Top Exercises (TTX) / staff exercises on “Host Nation Support”. The consortium consists of the province of Styria as consortium leader with the support of DMAT Consulting KG (Austria), as well as the project partners PubliComm (Austria), Prepared International (Germany), Resilience Solutions International (Austria) and the Department of Emergency Situations of Ministry of Internal Affairs of Romania.

The exercises are so-called “PlugIn Exercises”. A corresponding number of teams should “dock” on an existing exercise and try out all processes – from posting, arrival in the country, the inclusion of exercises up to relocating. Thus, the entire course of a disaster cycle is played through – from the beginning of a disaster, the national assistance, the request for international assistance, the entry and the arrival of international teams in the country concerned up to the relocation practiced.
