On Sunday 22nd January 70 Project partners and trainees from Crete, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta and Austria arrived at the Red Cross Education and Training Centre at Laubegg Castle for this Workshop and training.
On Monday an update of the PACES Project was given to them, as well as information on behaviour after earthquakes, impact of EQ´s. But also the Austrian structure of disaster response on governmental and regional/Styrian Level was presented.
Experts from Samaritan Styria, Austrian Red Cross, International Organisation for Migration, United Nations, Caritas and Italian Civil Protection reported about their real mission experiences after an earthquake in Haiti 2010 and 2016, Nepal 2015 and the last years as well as the current earthquake in mid Italy ( we are really sorry about what happend there - and our hearts and minds are with the Italian population).
On day two - the main topic was mass evacuation and camp management as well as people with specific needs after a natural disaster. In a short exercise the participants had to discuss issues how to set up a camp - keeping in mind the Sphere Standards as well as to discuss the different functions in a camp. Our highlight was the topic on “ALL” - meaning people with specific needs like children, elderly people, people with disability etc. - provided by a team from ECOBILITY of the WKO Styria.
Beside our training we also tried to show our “Styrian Hospitality” as well as excellent wines from the region - offered by Rebenland Weinkellerei Fresnig-Kitzeck and touristic information about GRAZ and our region. All in all - according to replies of participants - the workshop was percieved as very interesting for their work. Thanks to all who have supported us, especially the Team of “Laubegg Castle”.
